Earlier, he has interest in cricket, but his brother encouraged him to focus on badminton, so he took this field. His first coach is S.M. Arif and he coached by Prakash Padukone at the academy. He won the title of the National Badminton Championship from 1996 to 2000 more than four times. In the 1996 SAARC badminton tournament, he won gold and won silver in the 1998 Commonwealth Games. In 1999, he appeared in Toulouse Open Championship and Open Championship and won at both tournaments. By defeating world number one Peter Gade in the semi-finals, he won the trophy and recognized as the second Indian who beat his coach Prakash Padukone’s record in 1980.
