Mittal opened his first steel factory PT Ispat Indo in Sidoarjo, East Java, Indonesia when he was 26 years old. Then he purchased the state-owned steel works in Trinidad and Tobago in 1989. The company was at a heavy loss while he purchasing, but later he turned them into profitable. In 1995, he obtained the Irish Steel plant based in Cork, Ireland, from the government for a minimal fee of IR£. Only six years later in 2001, it was shut, leaving over 400 people laid off. In 2006–07, Mittal thrived in an aggressive seizure bid for Arcelor, which he renamed Arcelor Mittal.
